POMFRET, CT, May 19, 2003 - Fiberoptics Technology Inc. (FTI) announces
the development of
a proprietary process to manufacture glass fiber with improved flexing
resistance for use in dynamic applications.
The fiber will be used to manufacture components exposed to repetitive motion applications such as robotic arms , Igus® cable carriers and step and repeat machines.
After rigorous testing, the company reports it’s new fiber lasts as long or longer than plastic (PMMA) fiber used in the same flexing or repetitive motion applications. The new fiber has withstood 6M cycles, while some plastic fiber samples had already begun to exhibit reduced transmission due to broken fiber.
“The new fiber will reduce melting failures at the input and enhance output uniformity while improving the overall reliability of the part”, said Al Dexter, Engineering Manager for the company.
There is no additional cost associated with the new fiber, which can be manufactured on the company’s existing fiber drawing equipment.
